Doodle Cowl

Dates: Saturdays 9/27, 10/4, 10/11 Fee: $45

Time: 11:00 - 1:00 Taught by: Elaine Z.

It's Doodle time! You have hopefully noticed that the shop is now carrying Doodle Decks from the Pacific Knit Co. What is doodling? Basically, it's fair isle knitting, although some motifs may have more than two colors in a round. Using your doodle decks, you can choose the motifs that are most appealing to you. A sample cowl (using motifs from the Autumn Doodle Deck) is now in the shop to give you an idea of the finished product. Please note, you do not have to knit the exact same design for your cowl. You can pick and choose which motifs you want. For that matter, if you want to relinquish control, choose your cards at random for a fun-themed cowl.

Materials: Model used Alpaca Yarn Co. Classic Alpaca (DK weight) and US 4 and 5, 16" circular needles. Per the creator of the doodle concept, you must purchase your own doodle deck to take the class. Feel free to use thicker or thinner yarn and appropriate sized needles to make a bigger or smaller cowl.

Homework: Prior to class, please cast on 168 sts (for DK weight) with the smaller needles. Join in the round, being careful not to twist, and work in 1x1 ribbing for 1.5". You will then be all set to begin doodling.

Socks!

Dates: Thursdays 10/16, 10/30, 11/13

Time: 11:00 - 1:00 Taught by Ben Fee: $45

Learn how to make socks - either from the cuff down or from the toe up. For both, we will cover knitting in the round over small circumferences and decreases. For toe-up, you will also learn how to do a special cast on, increases, and a stretchy bind off. For cuff-down, you will also learn how to pick up stitches and do kitchener stitch.

Materials: 100 grams of sock yarn and US 2 needles. Needles can be double points, 32"+ circulars for magic loop, or two shorter circulars for 2 circulars. You can use a 9" circular if you prefer, but you will still have to use another method for the toe.

Beginning Knitting

Dates: Wednesdays 10/22, 10/29, 11/5, 11/12
Time: 6:30 - 8:30 Fee: $60

Learn the basics to knitting: how to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off. Use what you learned to start a simple project like a scarf, cowl, or fingerless mittens. Have a project in mind? Bring it in, and we'll see if it will work.
Materials: 100 grams of worsted weight yarn and US 8 / 5mm needles.

Beginning Crochet

Dates: Tuesdays 10/28, 11/4, 11/11 Time: 11:00 - 1:00

Fee: $45 Taught by: Joanna M.

Learn the basics to crochet: chaining, single crochet and double crochet. You will use what you learn to make something simple like a hat, scarf/cowl, or fingerless mittens.

Materials: 100 grams of worsted weight yarn and an H (US 8 / 5mm) crochet hook. You may want more than 100 grams if you want to make a longer scarf or cowl.

Sweater of your Choosing

Wednesdays 10/29, 11/12, 12/3, 12/17, 1/7, 1/21Time: 11:00 - 1:00 or 6:30 - 8:30Fee: $80 Taught by: Ben
Maybe you want to make your first-ever sweater maybe you've only made a couple, but you want to expand into a more difficult pattern maybe you want to try a unique style of sweater such as an icelandic, cocoknits, gansey, etc. maybe you've made enough sweaters to outfit all of Buffalo, and you just want to work with others who are also making a sweater. Get help with whatever pattern you choose. This class has two time options. Ideally you will choose one time slot, but you may mix and match times if you have scheduling conflicts, just let me know if you need to do so.

Materials: That is up to you. At the very least, you will need yarn, a pattern, and needles/hooks.

Five Roses Shawl

Wednesdays 11/5, 11/19, 12/10
Time: 11:00 - 1:00 Fee: $45 Taught by: Ben

Have fun with color in this shawl that uses a mixture of garter stitch, simple lace, and stripes. You'll be alternating between the two stitch patterns as well as the color you're using, so it won't get monotonous.

Materials: about 400 yards each of two colors of fingering weight yarn and US 5 circular needles, 24" or longer.

Increases and Decreases

Date: Wednesday 11/5 Time: 6:30 - 8:30
Fee: $20 Taught by Ben

We will go over several different types of increases and decreases and what makes each one special. You will be working them all in a swatch and have the option to make a coaster or bookmark.

Materials: Scrap yarn and appropriate sized needles. I suggest DK, Worsted or Chunky. A smooth yarn will make it easier to see your stitches.

Falling into Fission
Mary Martin KAL

Dates and Times:
11/6: 11:00 - 1:00 11/12: 1:00 - 2:00
11/13: 1:00 - 2:00 11/20: 11:00 - 1:00

Mary Martin, the inventor of fission knitting, designed a scarf for a knit-along in November hosted by KFI - the distributor of Juniper Moon yarn. As I've recently opened an account with KFI, I will be a participating shop. As this scarf is not a wide one, it's a good option for people wanting to get into fission knitting. For those who are not familiar with fission knitting, you essentially knit a marled fabric with two different colors held together, and using slip stitches and minor cables, you can have one design on the front and a different one on the back.

Come by the above dates to hang out with other people working on the scarf and get help when needed. The clues will be released 11/3, 11/7, and 11/17. I was told that one person from each store will win a prize. You do not have to use Herriot Fine to participate in the KAL with me. But, you do have to use it if you want a chance for this mystery prize.

Materials: The scarf comes in three length options. You will need 125, (170, 245) yards of color A and 95, (140, 215) yards of color B - both in fingering weight. The pattern calls for Juniper Moon Herriot Fine. It's scheduled to ship any day, so I should hopefully have it later this week. You will also need US 6-8 needles. Mary says the alpaca blooms and fills in the cables when using a bigger needle, so feel free to use the US 8 if you wanted an airier scarf. Lastly, you'll want a cable needle and a removable stitch marker.

Basic Hat

Dates: Tuesdays 11/18 and 12/9
Time: 6:30 - 8:30 Fee: $35 Taught by: Ben

You will learn how to knit in the round and decrease while making a simple hat. You can choose between a rolled edge, garter stitch, or ribbing for the brim. The crown will have the classic spiral-decrease pattern, but can easily be altered to have the X or + style if you prefer.

Materials: roughly 100 grams of yarn and needles suitable for the thickness you chose. Feel free to use anywhere from fingering to super bulky. For the standard style, you will want 16" circulars and double points. But, we can discuss other options if you're opposed to double pointed needles.
